Music Monday: Rihanna knows how to “Stay” at No. 1

I have always been a fan of Rihanna’s music, especially more in the last few years with how her style and sound have matured since “Pon de Replay” and “SOS“.

“Stay” features a soulful,  almost broken-sounding Rihanna and a beautiful piano collaboration which instantly caught my attention the first time I heard this song. Of all the 259 No. 1 songs to rule Billboard‘s Pop Songs chart, “Stay” is only the second piano-and-vocal-only No. 1, dethroning Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.”

This song is also a tie-breaker that allowed Rihanna to trump Katy Perry for the claim of being “the first artist in the 20-year history of Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs radio airplay chart to tally 10 No. 1s,” and only since 2006!

So here is some great music for your Monday. Lyrics after the video.

Stay ft. Mikky Ekko – Rihanna

All along it was a fever
A cold sweat, hot headed believer
I threw my hands in the air I said show me something
He said, if you dare come a little closer

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now tell me, now tell me, now tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay

It’s not much of a life you’re living
It’s not just something you take, it’s given
Round and around, and around, and around we go
Oh now tell me, now tell me, now tell me, now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay

Oh the reason I hold on
Oh ’cause I need this hole gone
Funny you’re the broken one but I’m the only one who needed saving
‘Cause when you never see the light, it’s hard to know which one of us is caving

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay, stay
I want you to stay, oh

Anniversary Song

Citizen Cope’s “Sideways” describes it perfectly.

You know it ain’t easy
For these thoughts here to leave me
There’s no words to describe it
In French or in English
Well, diamonds they fade
And flowers they bloom
And I’m telling you
These feelings won’t go away

They’ve been knockin’ me sideways
They’ve been knockin’ me out lately
Whenever you come around me
These feelings won’t go away
They’ve been knockin’ me sideways
I keep thinking in a moment that
Time will take them away
But these feelings won’t go away

Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess, Live On Earth

You’ve got the best of both worlds
You’re the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you’re needy,
Humble but you’re greedy
Based on your body language,
your shouted cursive I’ve been reading
You’re style is quite selective,
though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is

[Chorus]
Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don’t mind my nerve you can call it fiction
Cause I like being submerged in your contradictions dear
Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they’re quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities
There’s no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words that paraphrasing this relationship we’re staging

[Chorus]
And it’s a beautiful mess, yes it is
It’s like, we are picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And the kind and courteous is a life I’ve heard
But it’s nice to say that we played in the dirt
Cause here, here we are, Here we are

[x7]
Here we are

We’re still here

[Chorus]
And what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words in priceless pictures
We’ll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that’s no concern when we’re wounded together
And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it’s nice today, oh the wait was so worth it

“Created”

Some of you may already know about the brilliance and awesomeness of this band, but to those who don’t, I would like to introduce Portugal. The Man.

I started listening to this Portland-based band over three years ago and they instantly became one of my favorite bands. I’ve seen them at Austin City Limits and in Dallas, both were amazing shows, and they will perform at Index in Deep Ellum on October 5. I already have my ticket. 🙂

Lyrics.

“Listen to the cars just passing through
Help out all those friends that helped you too

You just do as you do
That’s all you can do

Open up your arms and hold on to
Everything you own that owns you too

And just let it all go
Because that’s all we can do”

“Come Pick Me Up”

A coworker introduced me to a mixture of new music, and one of my favorite artists from this is Ryan Adams.

My musical preferences didn’t use to include country, but over the years of becoming a naturalized Texan, different types of country have slowly crept in. Ryan Adams’ sound is similar to my tendencies for folk and mellow, alt-rock.

But like a friend of mine said, a little too much Ryan Adams puts you to sleep. Ultra mellow!

An interesting side-note, he is married to singer/actress Mandy Moore.

Lyrics.

“Earth To Bella (Part I)”

I present to you all Brandon Boyd, of Incubus, in all his glory.

Incubus is performing with Linkin Park (eh…I’d rather Incubus headline over LP any day) and MUTEMATH in the Honda Civic Tour, and they’re rolling through Dallas tonight! It’s an outdoor show at Gexa Energy Pavilion, so it should be a great time.

Lyrics.

“Earth to Bella
You think you’ve got it all figured in
Earth to Bella
Everything you know is wrong (well, almost)
Earth to Bella
I see where you are not listening
I bear the burden of being the voice that lets you know
We all grow old
And before you swim you’ve gotta be okay to sink”

“Who’s Thinking About You Now?”

Since it’s an oxymoron to say ‘happy Monday,’ here’s a bit of good music to make it a better one.

Jason Mraz and his awesome band came through Dallas Saturday night and it’s safe to say that was one of the best concerts I’ve been to in a while. I’m not the only one to think so, the show was packed. I don’t think I’ve seen this many fedoras in one place before!

“I feel like starting something.
I feel like calling off today to be with you.
Yeah, I believe we all do something that’s familiar like a deja vu,
Familiar like a deja vu.
Yeah, and I know this one cause I’ve seen your fire and I know we love,
We’re giving it up.
Do I qualify, qualify, qualify, qualify, qualify?

I want to be the one to help you move from Mr. Loneliness living in the
Kitchen of your home.
I’m hoping you can feel me.
I’m hoping that I don’t run out of breath, breath, yeah.

When our two hands are linked together with an ampersand,
It’s my kind of diagram.
When our sore eyes are lined up side by side,
Well, I’m a happy man,
Yes, I’m a happy man.
Yes ma’am, yes ma’am, yes ma’am,
I am thinking about you.”
